machines have existed over time, and 350 cc and 500 cc and sidecars. Up
in the 1950s and 1960s, most four-stroke engines dominated all classes.
In part this is because of a rule that allows a wide range of
cylinders
(thus smaller piston, so that the higher revs) and assorted gear
(narrow band power thus, resulting in higher States of tune).
In the
1960s, two-stroke engines began to take root in the smaller classes. In
1969, the FIM u2014citing high cost development to non-team working in
new rules that restrict all sixth-grade gear and
most two cylinders (in the case of the four-cylinder 350 cc and 500 cc
class).
